Habitat for Humanity ~ MetroWest/Greater Worcester (HFH-MWGW) is an independently-operated affiliate of Habi-tat for Humanity International. We are a nonprofit, Christian, housing ministry dedicated to making shelter a matter of conscience and action. We build simple, decent, affordable homes for low-income families in need of adequate housing. Building relationships and community is as important to us as building homes. We invite people of all faiths and walks of life together in partnership to lend a hand to those in need of better and affordable housing.

Founded in 1985, our affiliate (then known as Greater Worcester Habitat for Humanity) was one of the first Habitat affiliates established in Massachusetts. In 2008, we merged with the MetroWest Habitat to expand our service area to 29 municipalities surrounding and between Worcester and Framingham.

The essential building blocks of the Habitat program are volunteer labor and donated materials. Habitat does not give houses away, but rather we sell them through no-profit, no-interest loans to families in need. HFH-MWGW generally holds the mortgage for 30 years. Our partner families contribute 400-500 sweat equity hours helping build their homes alongside our volunteers. More than 25 families in our service area have already realized their dream of home ownership through our program that provides a hand up, not a handout to a better life.

Habitat uses three basic criteria in its family selection process: need for adequate shelter, ability to pay an affordable monthly mortgage and willingness to partner with Habitat. We conduct an extensive screening process of applicants, including housing, employment and credit reference checks, followed by in-home interviews for those families that qualify. Each family must be willing to contribute 400-500 hours of sweat equity building its home.

Habitat's life-changing work helps families become stakeholders in their communities and, in the proces, helps strengthen the neighborhoods and communities in which we al live, work and play.
